Types of Swimsuits for Ladies: Choosing One for Your Year-End Holiday Swim

The year-end school holidays run from 21 November to 31 December 2026 (Ministry of Education), and for many of us that means more time at the pool, the beach or a resort. This guide walks through the main types of swimsuits for ladies, what each one is good for, and what Singapore’s public pools ask you to wear, so you can pick a suit you feel at ease swimming in.

The main types of swimsuits for ladies are the one-piece, the tankini, the bikini, the swim dress or swim skirt, and full-coverage modest swimwear. For lessons and lap swimming, a snug one-piece or a sports tankini stays in place best. For sun and modesty, a full-coverage suit or a UPF-rated rash guard adds cover. Whichever style you choose, pick purpose-made swimwear in a chlorine-resistant fabric.

Types of Swimsuits for Ladies: The Classic One-Piece

A one-piece covers the body from the shoulders to the hips in a single piece of fabric. It stays in place when you push off the wall, glide and practise your kick, which is why a one-piece is the usual choice for swimming lessons and lap swimming. Racerback and cross-back styles keep the straps on your shoulders while your arms move.

If you would like a little more cover, look for a higher neckline, a lower leg cut or built-in shaping panels. Try the suit on and move your arms and hips as if you were swimming. A good fit stays put as you stretch and feels snug, with room to breathe.

Tankinis, Bikinis and Two-Piece Swimsuits

A tankini pairs a tank-style top with separate bottoms. It gives much of the cover of a one-piece with the ease of two pieces, which helps with changing and with toilet breaks. It also lets you choose a different size for the top and the bottom.

A bikini gives the least cover and suits sunbathing, beach days and easy dips. For lessons, a sports bikini with wider straps and a secure back fastening stays in place far better than a string style. Your coach will ask you to push off, glide and kick, so a top that holds firm keeps your mind on the swim.

Swim Dresses and Swim Skirts

A swim dress is a one-piece with a short skirt attached, and a swim skirt is a separate bottom with built-in briefs underneath. Both add cover around the hips and thighs, and they suit relaxed family swims and resort pools.

A long, loose skirt can float up and drag a little as you kick. For lessons, choose a shorter, close-fitting skirt or wear swim leggings underneath, so your legs move freely through the water.

Full-Coverage and Modest Swimwear

Of all the types of swimsuits for ladies, full-coverage swimwear gives the most cover. It covers the arms and legs, and some styles also cover the hair. Options range from swim leggings with a long swim top to the burkini, a loose two- or three-piece suit with a hood. It suits women who would like more modesty, more sun cover or simply more comfort in a mixed pool.

Choose a set made from swim fabric. ActiveSG’s rules for its swimming complexes ask for appropriate swimwear and list the items that stay out of the pool, including street wear, undergarments and translucent or non-colourfast fabric (ActiveSG Rules and Regulations). A swim-specific full-coverage suit fits those rules comfortably, while cotton leggings and T-shirts count as street wear. If modesty matters to you, our guide to women-only swimming and mixed classes compares the two.

Sun Protection for Outdoor Swims

Many holiday swims happen outdoors, at a beach, a resort or an open-air pool. A rash guard is a fitted swim top with long or short sleeves, and many are made from fabric with a UPF rating. UPF tells you how much UV gets through the fabric: a UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun’s rays (Skin Cancer Foundation).

Pair a rash guard with a one-piece, tankini bottoms or swim leggings for an easy outdoor set. Sunscreen still matters for your face, hands and feet, and a hat or shade between swims helps on long beach days.

Fabrics That Last in a Chlorinated Pool

Whichever of the types of swimsuits for ladies you choose, pool chlorine is hard on stretch fabric. Swimwear retailer SwimOutlet explains that standard spandex holds up poorly in chlorine, while PBT, a textured polyester, and polyester blends resist chlorine and keep their shape (SwimOutlet).

If you swim every week, a polyester or PBT suit is worth the extra cost. Rinse it in cool, fresh water after each swim, wash it gently by hand and dry it in the shade. Your hair benefits from the same rinse, and our swimming hair care guide explains how to protect it from chlorine.

Feel Confident in the Water This Holiday

Of all the types of swimsuits for ladies, the right one is the one you forget about once you are in the water. Bring two options to your first lesson if you are deciding between styles, and your coach can tell you which one stays in place better as you kick and glide.

At Splashiee Mermaids Swim School, every lesson is taught by a female swimming coach, and our coaches are experienced and vetted before they join. Lessons run at public pools near you or at your own condo pool, and our ladies swimming lessons welcome women who would like to start or return this holiday. Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions Icon

What is the best swimsuit for swimming lessons?

A snug one-piece or a sports tankini works best, because it stays in place while you push off, glide and kick. Choose a chlorine-resistant fabric such as polyester or PBT if you will swim every week.

Purpose-made full-coverage swimwear such as a burkini suits ActiveSG pools. Their rules ask for appropriate swimwear and list street wear, undergarments and translucent fabric among the items that stay out of the pool. If you have a question about a particular outfit, check with the pool counter before you change.

Rinse it in cool, fresh water straight after each swim, wash it gently by hand and dry it flat in the shade. A polyester or PBT suit keeps its shape in chlorine for longer than a standard spandex suit.

UPF measures how much UV radiation passes through a fabric. A UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun’s rays, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, so a UPF 50 rash guard or swim top adds strong sun cover for outdoor swims.
